Door-to-Door waste collection to start in Trutnov from the new year
The year 2030 is a milestone in waste management. A change in legislation in this area will result in a ban on landfilling of recoverable waste. Trutnov and its citizens must also prepare for this change. The only way forward is to sort as much waste as possible into recyclable components. That is why Trutnov is introducing a "Door-to-Door" system from January 2023 to help with sorting.
Who is affected by the change in the waste management system?
First, it will start with family houses. Door-to-Door does not apply to housing estates. Waste will be sorted through the PLAST and PAPER collection bins located directly outside individual properties. The aim is to increase the volume of waste sorted and at the same time reduce the amount of mixed municipal waste that ends up in the landfill in Bohuslavice. "At the same time, this system could eliminate some container stands, known as separation nests, and could bring greater cleanliness to those stands that remain. For many citizens, sorting of these commodities will become more comfortable, they will not have to go anywhere with their waste, because they will have containers placed right next to their houses," says Michal Rosa, Mayor of Trutnov. This will create approximately 3 000 collection points. If the system proves successful, it may be extended to residential buildings in the next phase.
How will the waste collection work?
The Door-to-Door system will start on 1 January 2023. Separated waste will be collected on the same day as mixed municipal waste. "If people are used to preparing their black bin for Monday collection, they will also prepare their plastic and paper bins for collection on the same day," explains Vendula Kasperová, head of the Environment Department at Trutnov Municipality. The collection of sorted commodities will be carried out once a month according to the COLLECTION CALENDAR, which is available at www.trutnov.cz, and will also be available to citizens in paper form when they pick up their plastic and paper bins and in the October issue of the Town Hall Gazette.
This new feature will be linked to a reduction in the frequency of collection of mixed municipal waste, i.e. waste that cannot be sorted - black bins will be collected once every two weeks. "In practice, it looks like if I have a collection day on Monday, then on Monday 1 mixed waste and bio-waste will be collected, on Monday 2 plastic, on Monday 3 mixed waste with bio-waste again and on Monday 4 paper. This 4-week cycle will be repeated continuously throughout the year," says Vendula Kasperová. "There is an objection that the black bins will be overflowing, their volume will not be sufficient for a fortnightly export. This is not the case. This system has already been proven by many towns, similar in size to Trutnov, but also much larger. A large amount of waste that does not belong in the black bins still ends up in the black bins, and in our experience it is mainly plastic and paper. The moment most citizens have a plastic and paper bin next to the black bin, there will be no reason not to sort these commodities," adds Jiří Ticháček from Transport Trutnov. Now people can also throw metal beverage cans into the plastic container. They will be separated from plastic waste in the sorting plant and then handed over for further processing.
The Door-to-Door system does not apply to housing estates at this stage, so the frequency of black bin collections will not change for housing estates. Within the limits of the possibilities (space, access for collection equipment, etc.), containers for separated waste will be added to the housing estates so that citizens living in prefabricated houses and apartment buildings will have coloured containers closer to them and can sort their waste more conveniently.
How to get the containers?
Owners of family houses, whose list is available at www.trutnov.cz, can pick up both collection containers free of charge at the headquarters of the collection company Transport Trutnov, s.r.o. (V Aleji 131, Trutnov 541 01). The bins will be loaned to citizens free of charge on the basis of a signed loan agreement. They can collect them from Monday 3 October 2022 on weekdays from 08:00 to 15:00. Currently, the city has a total of 4 800 plastic and paper containers with a capacity of 120 and 240 litres. The bins are paid for from the city's budget, with the city having applied for a grant to purchase them, from the Operational Programme Environment. A substantial part of the money spent will therefore be returned to the municipal budget.
If some houses were mistakenly not included in the list but are interested in the Door-to-Door system, just contact the collection company on +420 493 646 111 or email transport@mariuspedersen.cz.
