Wimbledon trophy goes to Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Jakub Filip is proud of it
This year he has already played at the Australian Open and Rolland Garros in Paris, but the young tennis player from Podkrkonoší region achieved his greatest success at the most famous of the four Grand Slams. After dropping out in the first round in singles, he and his partner Gabriel Vulpitta went on to win the most valuable trophy in doubles! "It means a lot to me, I haven't processed it yet," Jakub Filip said from London.
Czech tennis experienced great days in the first half of July. He had a cast in five Wimbledon final duels. Markéta Vondroušová won the most valuable trophy among the women, Barbora Strýcová and her partner dominated the doubles, and the athletes from the heart of Europe also did well in the junior section.
Four individuals fought for the title. Nikola Bartunkova fell short in the singles, losing to the American Ngounoue. In the doubles, however, it worked out and both final duels had an East Bohemian footprint. Among the juniors, Alena Kovačková, daughter of Eva Hrmová, a former player from Hradec Kralove, and her partner Laura Samsonová made it to the big triumph. Among the boys, Jakub Filip, a pupil of TC Dvůr Králové nad Labem, won together with Italian Vulpitta.

Jonáš Forejtek and Jiří Lehečka. These are the last Czech Wimbledon champions who won the junior doubles at the All England Club in 2019. On Sunday, the 17-year-old Jakub Filip managed to follow this duo, who together with Italian Gabriel Vulpitta defeated the sixth seeds Branko Djuric and Arthur Gea in the final without losing his serve 6:3, 6:3.
"It means a lot to me, I haven't processed it yet. It is the biggest Grand Slam of all," said Filip from Sparta in Prague, who has won six singles and seven doubles titles among juniors so far. The eighth one, Wimbledon, will stand out in his collection.
The world's current 51st junior has agreed to team up with Italian Vulpitta, who is five places higher, for the Wimbledon doubles. The Czech-Italian duo were definitely not among the favourites for Wimbledon, but they managed to overcome all the obstacles that the lot put in their way.
They were on the verge of elimination in the first round and in the quarterfinals. However, Filip and Vulpitta managed to pull off super tiebreaks against the Australian-American duo Jones and Razeghi and the Italians Bondioli and Cina 11:9.
"We played pretty consistently throughout the tournament. We didn't make any unnecessary mistakes, which made the difference in the final, because our opponents gave us a couple of balls for free. It's even more of an achievement because it was the first time my partner and I played," Filip pointed out that they had not met on the same side of the net before.
The young Czech tennis player started playing tennis at the age of four in Dvůr Králové nad Labem. Since then he has worked his way up to the wider junior ranks, which he has now confirmed in the All England xClub. This was also helped by his move to TK Sparta Prague, where he is growing in tennis. "Since last year, I have been training 90 percent of the time with Slava Dosedel, which is great," he praises the opportunity to work with the former world No. 26 player.
And who is the tennis role model of young Jakub, who played at the junior Grand Slam for the third time in his career? "I admire Jirka Lehecka and Kuba Mensik, but I look up to Djokovic. I saw him on the practice courts in Aorangi when he was warming up. And then he was training next to me. I have a picture with him," smiled the recent Wimbledon champion.
It is worth mentioning that Alena Kovačková is also connected with the Kralove Dvůr tennis club. She herself has never played in its colours, she is a player of Sparta Prague. However, her mother Eva Hrma was active in the club for a quarter of a century and her uncle Radek Hrma is even the chairman and head coach of the successful club in Královédvor.
